Dr. Martens

While the iconic Dr. Martens shoe story is closely connected with England, the story starts in 1945 in Germany when Dr. Klaus Maertens created a new air-cushioned sole. Shortly after that, the new design made its way over to Great Britain, when the R. Griggs Group bought the rights to manufacture the shoes and release the classic 1460 Dr. Martens boot in 1960. Born into England’s working-class (with an original price point of £2), the collection of different shoes with contrasting yellow stitches, “Airwair” branding, and new rubber outsole design developed into self-expression of British youth culture in the ‘70s and beyond.
