After Nike released Michael Jordan`s first two signature shoes both designed by Peter More, it was architect turned-sneaker-designer Tinker Hatfield`s turn to start working on the 3rd instalment. As MJ looked for a more lightweight basketball shoe with better durability, they decided to go Mid top with the Air Jordan 3. In addition, Tinker placed the Jumpman logo on the back and added the now infamous “elephant print” on the toe box as well as on the heel. The sole featured a visible Air unit making it the first Jordan to incorporate that feature. It was further a great marketing strategy that made the shoe iconic, featuring Spike Lee as “Mars Blackmon” and MJ himself as well the obvious first NBA MVP award, Defensive Player of the Year honors, and another Slam Dunk trophy.
