Sock-like designs have been in the Nike repertories since a long time since the ´70s to be exact. With sneakers like the Air Flow, Air Huarache, and Presto in the ´90s the domination of soft uppers and easy to access trainers took over. On a trip to Japan in 2000, future CEO Mark Parker (who was a designer back then) met Hiroshi Fujiwara and they discussed samples of the Sock Racer who was celebrating its 20 year anniversary soon, so they wanted to create something new and modern and bring an idea from 1984, a sock with a sole to life. Further discussions, including how a shoe could be produced with a computerized knitting process emerged, which led to the first Sock Dart drafts. Fun fact, it’s not Flyknit as we know it today, it can be seen as the forefather of it though. Fast forward to 2004, the Sock Dart was released in 6 colorways, featuring the silicone rubber forefoot strap, a reinforced toecap (similar to the Prestos), a unique sole that matches the perforated upper as well as a flexible rubber outsole. Today, the Sock Dart is still an underdog, that gets love from the sneakerheads and international collaborators.
