”Celebrate Success Pack”

Care for another success story? Probably not. Most likely, your social media feed, your favourite tv shows, even the dinner parties you try to host once in a while, are pretty much overflowing with these already. It’s the 2010’s: success is everywhere. On the surface, that is.

Because we all sort of know this is a mirage. Success, in the real sense, isn’t really about taking that selfie by an infinity pool and posting it straight to Instagram. Or, it could be, if infinity pools is what you truly value – nothing wrong in dedicating ones life to the perfect swim. You get the point though: Real success isn’t trying to achieve someone else’s idea of whatever constitutes a #winning lifestyle. Real success is the things that makes you happy because you love doing them.

Out of that idea, the adidas x Sneakersnstuff Celebrate Success pack was conceived, the next installment in adidas ongoing collaboration with the Stockholm based sneaker emporium. When Sneakersnstuff opened for business in Stockholm’s Södermalm district in the late 90’s, more than anything else it was a catalyst for founders Erik Fagerlind and Peter Jansson’s love for sneaker and hip hop culture. In Swedish terms they were pioneers, from there things grew, and Sneakersnstuff is now a success story, in the real sense: Branches in London and Paris, worldwide internet reach, et cetera – but also a business crafted from love, still rooted in the values gave birth to it.

There are lessons to be learned here, and Ben Gorham did. As one of the ambassadors of the Celebrate Success pack, he cites his old friends Erik and Peter as main inspirations when launching his own, now global, perfume house Byredo.

Sabina Ddumba, breakout singer and another Celebrate Success ambassador, keeps it in the family – but also goes her own way. Coming from a Ugandan background, she went to a Christian school in Stockholm. Now, at 22, coming of age singing gospel and studying whatever parts of the holy scriptures she felt spoke to her, has given her a deeply rooted sense of self and where to go next.

Babba Canales is on the same page. Success to our third ambassador is about self-fulfillment, but also about progressing society as a whole. Growing up in a Swedish small town with immigrant parents who didn’t speak the language, she knows a thing or two about pinpointing old structures – and disrupting them. Now she has a lead position at one of the world’s fastest growing start-up companies.

Respect your values, in other words. Call it a Swedish thing – people here pride themselves in keeping both feet on the ground. Why not wear good shoes while you’re at it?

Millennials are like assholes: everyone has an opinion – on them. So does Babba Canales. Her actually being a millennial might lend her views some substance, though.

– Young people today are very focused on their needs, and I’m all for it. But you also need to understand what you’re actually good at. And how that fits with your employer’s needs.

Ms Canales (Barbara in her passport, Babba everywhere else) seems to know both ends of that argument. Still only 25, she accomplished one of her childhood dreams a year ago and left her native Sweden to work in New York. Her new job: lead marketing manager at one of the world’s fastest growing start-up companies. Kids take note – in January, Babba made Forbes magazine’s prestigious 30 Under 30 list, and was named one of the brightest young business leaders of 2016.

– To me, success and freedom are the same things. I am extremely happy and privileged to be where I am today. And I’m also very proud, because I know I’ve accomplished this on my own.

Babba Canales is born and raised in Kristianstad, a small town in the southernmost part of Sweden. Her parents arrived there from Chile in the late 80’s, political refugees seeking asylum from Pinochet’s Junta dictatorship. In many ways, Babba became their bridge to Swedish society.

– They didn’t really learn the language during their first years in the new country, so I was the first family member that “became Swedish”. At the age of five, I was their interpreter, helping them dealing with the bank and so on.

Millennials are like assholes: everyone has an opinion – on them. So does Babba Canales. Her actually being a millennial might lend her views some substance, though.

Since she knew of nothing else, all this seemed natural to Babba Canales – and, in turn, awarded her with what some might call a supernatural self-confidence. Ambition, she says, was just as innate. Young Babba loved going to school, thus was a great student. She was into fashion from a very early age, and consequently wanted to make her own money to be able to expand the wardrobe.

But it had to be by doing stuff she actually liked:
– I probably realised I was an entrepeneur before I even knew the word. A neighbour was an awesome seamstress, so I asked her to help me make changes to dresses I got cheap at H&M. Then I started selling them on eBay. Not that I made any real money from it, but I was 16 and it was more than enough.

Things moved on from there. Babba Canales is myoptic, and being fashion-conscious she soon realised something was missing on the world wide web: A stylish blog on glasses.

Why wait? At 20, Babba and her friend Jasmin Yaya launched Bonocle.com. Soon it was the world’s biggest independent eyewear blog. Five years later, she’s in East Village, New York, modelling another one of her favourite things: Sneakers. Babba Canales likes representing the homeland, she says, preferring to wear Swedish and Scandinavian fashion.

– I buy loads of kick-ass heels that soon just become interior details at home. They’re too painful too actually wear! I like comfy shoes. And I love sneakers. “My” adidas from the Sneakersnstuff project are golden, which is sort of a bonus honour. I always wear gold.

What’s in a smell? Ask Ben Gorham – founder of scent emporium Byredo, entrepeneur extraordinaire, family man and former basketball pro – and you will probably get a rebound: What’s in a dream?

Byredo launched in 2006 with a line of four perfumes. A decade after its inception, the Stockholm based brand boasts 23 different fragrances, close to 150 beauty and body care products, scented candles, a capsule collection of sun glasses and a full range of leather goods, including backpacks and duffels.

But what psyches Ben Gorham the most is not really the products in themselves. It’s their effects. Take Insensatus, his joint project with Belgian-German artist Carsten Höller. It’s a toothpaste. But it also someting that, potentionally, takes your brain to another dimension.

Ben Gorham explains:
– Scents have amazing ways of affecting your mind. They revive memories, paint very vivid pictures. I wanted to create a fragrance that would sort of guide your dreams through the night. Carsten Höller then had the brilliant idea of adding taste to the process.

Et voilĂ : A toothpaste!
– Research suggests that men, women and children dream very differently. And brushing your teeth is the most mundane ritual of the day. So depending on which of our three toothpastes you use before you go to bed, you also get to choose what your dreams will be. The magic of it is that it actually works.

This almost existential approach to business seem to be how Ben Gorham operates. Most of his ideas – be it a new fragrance, or a whole product line – come from specific memories or experiences. And a lot of his work is based on relations: family, friends, acquaintances.

Teaming up with Sneakersnstuff was no different. Ben Gorham has known Erik Fagerlind and Peter Jansson since his teens, shooting hoops and yearning for boxfresh kicks.

– We were all part of the late 80’s early 90’s hip hop thing in Stockholm. But you couldn’t really get good sneakers in Sweden then. When Sneakersnstuff opened for business, Erik and Peter created a new segment here.

Sneakers, in a way, is also what led Ben Gorham to where he is today. – Being so obsessed with something, just an accessory really, but also something that carried meaning and mirrored your identity and culture, was really an eye-opener for me. When I started drawing up plans for Byredo, I brought that with me.

These days, Ben Gorham lives just a few blocks from the first Sneakersnstuff store in the Södermalm district of Stockholm. And in terms of entreprenurial core values, they’re still on the same page:

– In terms of role models, Erik and Peter are the guys. Their business is a labour of love, and the same goes for Byredo. I really just wanted to create something where, waking up everyday, I could do exactly what I wanted. To me that’s the only success that matters.

So, before going to bed, which toothpaste do you use?
– I’d rather dream like a child.

Three years ago, Sabina Ddumba’s world rocked. Sort of. Growing up in FisksĂ€tra, a high-rise neighborhood in Nacka outside of Stockholm, the recent Grammy winner always assumed she was born at the local hospital. Then, newsflash:

– One day my older sister tells me “no no, you were born at the hospital in Södermalm in central Stockholm. I know this for a fact, ‘cause I was there!”. I always felt like a city kid. Turns out I actually am one too!

Of course, by this time Sabina Ddumba’s sense of self had already taken her to the city. Coming from a Ugandan background – big, church going family, Bible studies in school and singing in Stockholm’s premier gospel choir in Tensta – she says she had to find her own way early.

– I’m very close to my family, the 7 out of 8 people in it that are still here in Sweden. My mother left us and went back to Uganda when I was really young. Obviously I was devastated. But I also realised quickly that there was no point in staying furious or resentful about it. So I accepted that this was the way things were going to be. And started focusing on what I wanted to do with my life.

Music came naturally. The presence of music – singing, dancing and drama – was constant in the family. In kindergarten, Sabina the five-year-old got her friends together and organised advanced choreographies mimicking Destiny’s Child, the Spice Girls and N’Sync.

– Dancing was my thing then, I didn’t really think about singing. I just happened to sing along to all the songs while doing dance routines.

Now, at 22, she’s one of Sweden’s fastest rising stars, performing at legendary venues all over the country, already drawing comparisons to Mary J Blige and Aretha Franklin.

Like them, Sabina Ddumba first proper singing gigs were in a gospel choir. She went to a Christian school, the holy scriptures were on the curriculum.

Dancing was my thing then, I didn’t really think about singing. I just happened to sing along to all the songs while doing dance routines.

– But I always felt faith was something rooted in me, personally. The parts of the Bible that spoke to me I took to heart. The rest I didn’t care so much about. It is a book with a lot of pages.

Joining the Tensta Gospel Choir, arguably Stockholm’s finest, was a step on this journey: Going her own way. She’s never liked praying, she reveals. Singing the gospel is Sabina Ddumba’s way of talking to God.

– Before joining the choir, noone really told me I was good at singing. I just did it anyway. And then, people started paying attention.

Cedwin Sandanam, director of the Tensta Gospel Choir, is now her manager and joins the Celebrate Success photoshoot at the Mosebacke terrace, just around the corner from the Sneakersnstuff office in Södermalm.

– My cousin Mogge actually works at Sneakersnstuff now, so I don’t go there as much as I used to. Which was like every day. I love shoes. And I LOVE Adidas. But I don’t want to bother him too much! I see my family all the time anyway. Sabina Ddumba says it with a laugh. And looks out the window at the postcard view of Södermalm – her home turf, as it were.
