In 1916, Keds were introduced by U.S. Rubber Company as the first sneaker brand. Keds shoes were called sneakers, referring to the soft and quiet rubber sole allowing the wearer to "sneak up" on unsuspecting friends or family. The first sneaker, the Keds Champion has remained a style icon for almost 100 years.
